Musical Instrument Tuition

Ukulele & “Lap style” Guitar (Dobro) tuition

Playing a musical instrument is great fun and is something that most people would wish to do, given the opportunity.

In addition to providing endless enjoyment, playing an instrument has well documented health benefits ! (a few links at foot of page)

You may have been put off in the past by a strict academic approach to learning about music (I certainly was!).

I have been a professional educator and facilitator for 35 years –  no matter what your age, starting from scratch or wanting to improve then I can help.

No scary academic musical theory to learn – just practical help to get you “up and playing” your instrument (and smiling).

Although based in Clitheroe in the beautiful Ribble Valley I give lessons / workshops in the surrounding area  (most students feel more comfortable learning in their own homes or social clubs). Please contact me to discuss.

Bespoke tailored tuition – “one to one” or group lessons

Ukulele ( soprano, concert, tenor and baritone) – all musical styles

The “humble” ukulele is the most fun and versatile but sadly underrated stringed instrument I have encountered.

It’s an ideal instrument for beginners as you can get some results quickly but it is very popular amongst people who may have played guitar in the past and are looking for a new challenge.

So portable – take away and play anywhere!

Be careful if buying an instrument for the first time – ukuleles come in many shapes, sizes and tempting designs. Many are really just toy/novelty instruments –  so please do some research before parting with your hard earned cash.

Dobro – lap-style steel guitar – all musical styles – a great instrument to learn if you are a blues, country music, bluegrass or hawaiian music fan.

Playing a guitar placed flat on your lap and using a steel bar on the strings may seem a little unusual at first sight but  you will certainly be familiar with the distinctive sound.

If you’re a complete beginner or a guitarist looking for a new challenge  – this is the most eye and ear catching way to play a guitar.

Search the internet for Dobro or Lap steel (using your engine of choice) – prepare to be amazed

You do not need to invest in specialised custom instruments to play in this style – an inexpensive steel strung acoustic guitar can be modified to become a great student instrument.

I regularly deliver lessons / workshops in the Ribble Valley and North Lancashire. I’ve performed and delivered at  music festivals around the UK and am proud to have been on the teaching staff at the world renowned Sore Fingers School in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

Review from Acoustic Magazine – The Sore Fingers Experience – Beginners Dobro Class 2009

“Because of his relaxed approach, no one felt intimidated by their technique, or absence thereof, and Bill’s avowed intent that everyone would leave with a tune to play was achieved with much laughter and enjoyment along the way”
